Moses and his team guided us in Madagascar in late 2024. We visited for 2 week from late Oct-early Nov as were primarily interested in bird watching, and this was a good season for birding in that region as it is pre-monsoon and during spring in the Southern Hemisphere. From airport pick-up to the end, Moses truly was incredibly hospitable and worked really hard throughout the trip to ensure that we saw as much of our targets as possible. He also responds very quickly based on the vibes he senses from his clients, which we appreciated. For example, I think it quickly became evident to him that we were really eager to be out in the Madagascan rainforests during the morning hours to maximize our chance of seeing some of the tougher birds - therefore he would efficiently organize packed breakfasts for us so that we could eat out in the field. Additionally, two members of our group were vegetarian and Moses was always extremely helpful in helping us communicate when ordering food in order to prevent meat appearing in the dishes we ordered (the menus are not entirely accurate). Over the two weeks, we covered four major sites - Andasibe (lowland rainforest), Ranomofana (montane rainforest), Ankarafantsika (dry tropical forest) and Majanga (coastal). During this time, we also saw ten species of lemurs including the largest extant species (Indri) and the critically endangered Golden Bamboo Lemur. Bird-wise, I saw 125 countable species, including extremely good views of at least one member of each of the five endemic bird families. Some of the highlights of our trip included the Ground-rollers (we had great views of three species: Pitta-like, Scaly and Rufous-headed), Cuckoo-Roller, Velvet Asity, Madagascar Flufftail, Sickle-billed Vanga and Red-capped Coua. I will also note that if you enjoy herpetology, Madagascar is truly a dream destination: we encountered an astounding number of chameleons, geckos and snakes. If you are a bird watcher, I would recommend asking Moses about visiting Masoala as it's the largest remaining contiguous forest patch on the island and hosts several of the rarer species. However going to this site requires some organization as domestic flights need to be arranged. Travelling in Madagascar can be a bit challenging as there are several long drives. But Moses and his team were really hard-working and made sure that we were as comfortable as possible and safe throughout the trip. I highly recommend his services if you are visiting Madagascar.
My friends and I (group of 7) did a 14 days tour with Tours of Madagascar. Moses, the owner and main guide of the company was patient and accommodating during the planning phase. His knowledge of the wildlife areas and roads were valuable and was able to craft a sensible itinerary based on our interests. When we arrived, we were welcomed by his team. This includes a secondary guide along with two drivers for our two vehicles. The team was proactive in helping us with our luggage throughout the entire trip. It is highly commendable that our drivers were exceptional in their driving skills, being able to drive 15 hours through the night, navigating through poor road conditions such as congestions, potholes as well as dark foggy roads, bringing us to our destination safely. One of our drivers even brought us for small tours along the road. When one of our members had food poisoning, the driver was attentive to his needs and even offered to find medication for the ill. Moses himself is highly professional when interacting with his clients. He readily attends to our needs and requests with a smile. More often than not, he is busy with logistics and planning even after we are off to bed to ensure that the trip is as smooth-sailing as possible. For example, when one of our vehicles had technical issues, he was in contact with the car rental company and managed to replace the vehicle before the start of the next day. Moses is highly experienced in handling and advising foreign clients. He makes recommendation for accommodations and food which are agreeable to foreign palates. As far as possible, he puts in effort to keep the party safe and sound so that everyone enjoys their trip in Madagascar. There was an incident where one of our members took a bottled water from the fridge in one of the restaurants. Moses who was seated at a table away, quickly stopped the member from drinking from the bottle as he noticed something was amiss. It was either that the bottled was not sealed or the water level was not that was a properly sealed bottle. As tourist, we do get complacent and may not check that the bottled water is properly sealed all the time. It was possibly an unethical business practice where restaurant refills used bottles as new as we heard Moses told off the staff in Malagasy. Moses’ knowledge of the wildlife and where to find them is great. He is able to advise clients the best place to observe and photograph different species ranging from frogs and chameleons to the various species of lemurs. At each location, Moses has contacts with local guides that are highly professional and experienced in spotting local wildlife. Do let him and his local guides know in advance if you are interested in any particular species and he will be able to advise and plan the trip such that you have the best chance of seeing them. Moses led our group of four on a fantastic bird watching tour of Madagascar. We visited numerous unique habitats across the island, from montane (cloud) rainforest in Ranomafana to coastal ecosystems in the northwest. What really stood out to me was the flexibility and adaptability with which Moses managed our group, it really felt like he wanted us to get the most out of the trip. For example, he encouraged us to make as many stops as we wanted on the road to spot things we’d seen from the car. This enabled us to view many species we otherwise might not have had the chance to observe. Moreover, we wanted to get out early most mornings to improve our odds of spotting birds when they’re more active. To facilitate this, Moses would arrange for our breakfasts to be pre-packed and that the driver and local guides were co-ordinated with our schedule. Many tour guides would simply not demonstrate this level of care and enthusiasm for his clients’ experiences. Overall, I had a wonderful time in Madagascar and I’m happy that we organised our trip through Moses.
